Field Trip: Mai Po Night Safari

Why We Recommend it

Experience the unique nocturnal wildlife of the Mai Po Nature Reserve as creatures such as bats and otters emerge after dark.

Description

Join a guided night safari to Mai Po Nature Reserve, a large wetland in the northwest New Territories managed by the World Wildlife Federation. As the sun sets, explore the reed bed on a peaceful walk before venturing into the traditional shrimp ponds (gei1 wai4 基圍), where nocturnal creatures become active. Encounter the mesmerising glow of the Mai Po firefly, a luminescent wonder named after this sanctuary. There is also a chance to spot other animals, including bats, frogs, snakes and even the rare Eurasian otter of the southern China region. This immersive experience allows participants to engage all their senses and appreciate the rich biodiversity of Mai Po after dark, offering a rare glimpse into the life of the wetlands.

Mai Po is an internationally significant wetland, which is listed by the Ramsar Convention, and supports globally-important numbers of wetland birds, which chiefly arrive in winter and during the spring and autumn migrations. In the summer, it is an entirely different environment.

The tour on 13 July leaves Central by coach at 17:00 and returns by 22:00.
