WWF Specialists Lead a Night Safari to Mai Po

Why We Recommend it
Guided by WWF specialists, this sensory night safari through Mai Po reveals its summer ecology, from glowing fireflies to bats and wetland life after dark.
Description
Join an after-hours exploration of Mai Po Marshes, where the wetland transforms into a vivid nocturnal landscape. Guided by WWF specialists, this summer safari invites participants to attune to the rhythms of the marsh at dusk — when reedbeds soften in the fading light and hidden species begin to emerge. As an internationally significant wetland, Mai Po offers a rare seasonal perspective on a Ramsar-listed site more often associated with migratory birds, shifting attention instead to its lesser-seen night ecology.
Expect immersive encounters with fireflies unique to Mai Po, alongside bats, frogs, snakes and the rare Eurasian otter of southern China. Moving through reedbeds and a gei wai (traditional shrimp pond), the walk emphasises close observation and sensory awareness as these nocturnal species animate the landscape.
Organised by RGS-HK, the group departs Central by coach at 17:00 and returns at 22:00, beginning with a sunset walk in the reedbeds, followed by a night expedition to a gei wai with bat and firefly observation.
Please note: Due to Typhoon Signal No. 3, the field trip will be postponed and rescheduled to Friday, 14 August.
