Film Screening and Conversation on Chikako Yamashiro

Why We Recommend it

A screening programme at M+ presents three films by Chikako Yamashiro that explore the body’s inarticulate expressions as gateways to hidden histories and traumas. The event includes a conversation with the artist moderated by Alan Yeung.

Description

The films of Chikako Yamashiro treat the human body’s subtle utterances and pulses as windows into repressed traumas, hidden histories, and unseen dimensions of time. A screening at M+ brings together three works from different stages of her career: Your Voice Came Out Through My Throat (2009), a Japanese veteran’s memories of the battle of Saipan; Mud Man (2016), which excavates colonial histories shared between Okinawa and Jeju Island; and Flowers of Belau (2023), featuring an elderly Okinawan man’s inherited imaginations of Belau.

Following the screening, Yamashiro will join a conversation moderated by Alan Yeung, M+ Associate Curator, Ink Art. The discussion will be held in Japanese and English, with consecutive interpretation in English.
