Description
At F11 Foto Museum’s upcoming exhibition, Hong Kong Dream, discover eminent photographer Frank Horvat’s black-and-white images. In 1962, commissioned by the German magazine Revue, he teamed up with writer Dieter Lattmann to explore major world cities, including Hong Kong. Captivated by Hong Kong’s extraordinary density, Horvat captured the city in black-and-white images that fill the frame with his subjects – revealing architectural, cultural and sensorial stories.
Horvat (1928–2020) was an Italian-born photographer who revolutionised fashion photography starting in the late 1950s by applying 35mm film cameras and reportage techniques to the genre. Inspired by legendary photojournalists Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa, Horvat moved away from traditional studio shoots to place models in dynamic, real-life urban settings. This fresh, candid style quickly gained acclaim in France, England and the United States, with his work published in major magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Jardin des Modes.
