Turmoil to Transcendence: Freddy Carrasco’s Transformative Art

Why We Recommend it

Dominican-Canadian artist Freddy Carrasco’s first exhibition in Hong Kong rejects consumerism, returning to the materiality and rawness of the physical world.

Description

Freddy Carrasco’s inaugural exhibition in Hong Kong, Return to Nothing, in WKM Gallery explores the rawness and vulnerability of the physical world, searching for the universal and collective desire for connection, meaning and transcendence in humanity.

Key works include “samsara,“ in which a vague outline of a face can be seen before, or behind a similarly vague grid, calling back to Hong Kong’s grid-filled urban spaces and its oppressive and claustrophobia-inducing atmosphere. The wall-hanging work “Leave Nothing” is made of another grid-like structure, using burnt wood and linen as a homage to the art of bamboo scaffolding unique to Hong Kong.

A Canadian artist of Dominican heritage, Carrasco has cultivated a diverse multidisciplinary practice over the past decade spanning painting, sculpture, animation, illustration, music and spatial design. His works explores the relationship between grief, intimacy, identity, spirituality and the consumerist society. Making use of his personal experiences, his work searches for collective meaning and different perspectives on healing and liberation.
