Why We Recommend it

This year’s French May Cinema Programme spotlights films of the legendary Marguerite Duras and a showcase of the eclectic charm of contemporary French comedies.

Description

From 19 May to 3 June, the new edition of the French May Cinema Programme presents a diverse selection of French screenings commemorating Marguerite Duras and celebrating contemporary French comedy.

Marking the 30th anniversary of the renowned French novelist and playwright’s passing, The Cinema of Marguerite Duras introduces her six long features, including four adaptations of her own novels and plays, La Musica, Destroy, She Said, Yellow The Sun and India Song; as well as two original works Nathalie Granger and The Night Boat.

The event also collaborates with the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society’s Cinefan to present six films based on Marguerite Duras’ scripts, including Hiroshima Mon Amour, Seven Days… Seven Nights, The Long Absence, Mademoiselle, The Lover and The Sea Wall.

Another highlight of this year’s programme is The Art of French Comedy, a showcase of new French comedies that presents six films released or soon to be released in 2026. The selection includes The Better Me, a scathing critique of the urge to constantly compare oneself to goals set by society; Tough Luck, directed by prominent actor and filmmaker Gérard Jugnot, who visited Hong Kong at the end of 2025 for the 54th Hong Kong French Film Festival and the Asian premiere of Family Price, a comedy based on a play performed in the city in 2024.

The films will be screened at cinemas like MOViE MOViE Pacific Place, Premiere Elements and Broadway Cinematheque.
