The annual Hong Kong French Theatre Festival is raising funds for A Child’s Smile, a charity founded more than 20 years ago by Marie-France and Christian des Pallières to improve the education and medical care of children in Cambodia.
This year, the festival returns with four diverse plays. 1830 Sand, Hugo, Balzac tout commence by Manon Montel tells the epic story of three souls torn between their genius, their ambitions and their loves.
Intra Muros by multi Molière Award-winning author Alexis Michalik follows ageing comedian Richard as he is preparing to direct his first theatre class in a prison. He is assisted by his ex-wife Jane, a former actress, and an inexperienced social worker named Alice. When only two inmates turn up, Richard decides to go ahead with the class nonetheless – and so begins a captivating and darkly comic exploration of life within prison walls.
You can also discover the incredible destiny of Thérèse du Parc, also known as Marquise, an actress in Molière’s theatre troupe, in Aime comme Marquise by Philippe Froget. The audience will be transported Paris in 1668, where Marquise is about to play Andromaque, a drama by Racine, when the Police Lieutenant General goes into her dressing room to interrogate her, acting on orders from the King.
L’affaire Dussaert, by Jacques Mougenot, traces the scandal caused by the last exhibition of the artist Philippe Dussaert in the 1990s. A talented writer and comedian, Mougenot relays the story with humour and irreverence. The play has been performed more than 700 times around the world, raising questions about contemporary art.
Please note that some plays have age restrictions.
