Fung Ming-chip’s Fourth Show at gdm

Why We Recommend it

Visual artist Fung Ming-chip’s fourth solo exhibition at gdm is a three-decade retrospective, which explores his evolving and experimental calligraphic language.

Description

Local visual artist Fung Ming-chip’s fourth solo exhibition at gdm, a retrospective spanning over 30 years of the artist’s dynamic practice. Entirely self-taught, Fung continually pushes the boundaries of traditional Chinese calligraphy, blending classical forms with modern aesthetics, script with image and figuration with abstraction. His work bridges centuries of visual thinking while revealing the wit, rhythm and curiosity that define his creative voice.

In his latest series, Fung transforms Taoist Fulu talismans — meant to ward off evil spirits — into playful commentaries on the digital age. As a keen acolyte of the latest internet trends, these works parody modern desires, frustrations and superstitions with irreverent humour. Through this fusion of ancient ritual and Chinese pop culture vernacular, Fung captures the restless evolution of language and belief, illuminating how tradition adapts to a rapidly shifting world.
