Waving Script: FutureScope’s Third Experiential Chapter

Why We Recommend it
FutureScope’s third and final chapter in 2026, Waving Script – Bizhentu, fuses Chinese calligraphy, ArtTech and Cantonese opera dance.
Description
FutureScope, Hong Kong’s pioneering large-scale art dome, unveils its third and final chapter in 2026 from 30 March to 5 April, Waving Script – Bizhentu. Conceptualised by media artist Chris Cheung (h0nh1m), this cross-media work draws from the Eastern Jin dynasty’s (266-420 AD) Bizhentu essay — attributed to Lady Wei — exploring brushstroke theory amid lost historical works. It bridges traditional Chinese philosophy’s intentional (有為) and unintentional (無為) through technology, dance and emptiness (空性), transforming ink as a vessel of life into immersive, spherical experiences.
Contemporary calligrapher Xu Jing’s Wine Script technique — using ink’s oxidation with aged red wine — lends textural depth, captured via her brainwaves during writing. Cheung integrates this data into generative visuals, extending his M+-commissioned 2023 work, “Ink | Pulse.” A robotic arm traces spherical calligraphy, translating brush force, speed and rhythm into 3D choreography, liberating strokes from the page.
The exhibition is free and requires pre-registration.
Alongside it, Cantonese opera artist Leung Fei-tung reinterprets Bizhentu’s seven fundamental brushstroke images — such as “Thousand-Mile Cloud Array” — through water-sleeve dance performances synced with real-time projections. From 20 to 22 March, there will be three daily ticketed shows: 17:00–17:30, 18:30–19:00 and 20:30–21:00.
