Harbour Fragments: Rick Lowe’s Abstract Take on Hong Kong

Why We Recommend it
Rick Lowe’s Harbour Fragments is the Houston-based artist’s first solo show in Asia, featuring bold abstract paintings inspired by aerial views of Victoria Harbour and the city’s urban fabric.
Description
Harbour Fragments is Houston-based artist Rick Lowe’s first solo exhibition in Asia. Presented at Gagosian, it features a new series of paintings abstracting aerial views of Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. His works explore the complex geography and social fabric of Hong Kong through an improvisational approach inspired partly by dominoes patterns that Lowe plays with residents worldwide – adapting intricate juxtapositions to foreground aspects of urban structures and civic relationships.
To create Harbour Fragments, Lowe divided a large-scale painting across twenty-one canvases. All but two of these panels feature segments of Victoria Harbour, emphasising the vital relationship between water and land in shaping Hong Kong’s history and identity.
Complementing the exhibition, the artist will participate in the two-day Reimagining Urban Futures forum at the Hong Kong Arts Centre from 5 to 6 September. Elsewhere, on 5 September, he will also deliver a keynote on Project Row Houses at Eaton Hotel and lead a workshop on social sculpture at RE: Tai Kok Tsui Pavilion on 6 September, engaging communities in conversations about art’s role in urban transformation.
