Merry-Go-Nowhere: Exploring Candyce Wong’s Playful Paintings

Why We Recommend it
In Merry-Go-Nowhere, Candyce Wong Ka-ying’s intuitive, childlike paintings turn subconscious feelings into a playful visual language.
Description
Gallery Exit’s Merry-Go-Nowhere is a solo exhibition by local artist Candyce Wong Ka-ying. Drawing from automatic writing-inspired paintings and intuition, Wong constructs playful paintings combining scribble and collage to construct her imagery. Her childlike imagery — scribbles, stitched labels and recurring dogs — emerges from impulse rather than plan, creating scenes filled with emotional ambiguity.
In works such as “Maybe it’s a Carsick Dog” and “Living in an Apple,” she captures moments of quiet anxiety beneath cheerful surfaces. Emphasising texture and materiality, Wong treats each painting as distinct objects, transforming everyday impressions into lasting, tactile memories.
Gallery Exit is also hosting the solo exhibition Drifting by local artist Angie Choi Nga-sze. Both exhibitions run until 10 January 2026.
