Gallery EXIT: Three Distinct Visual Experiences

Why We Recommend it
Three concurrent solo exhibitions at Gallery EXIT deliver a poignant reflection on modernity, its ambivalences and how we experience our worlds.
Description
Gallery EXIT is running three solo exhibitions concurrently, each of which delivers a poignant reflection on the ambivalence in modern experiences. Notably, celebrated Tunisian artist Fares Thabet is exhibiting his new body of work — in which he paints bright ethereal landscapes of North Africa, composing luminous scenes of tranquility. There is a certain sense of ambivalence in the stark contrast between the intensity of his colours and the quietude depicted, with the vast expanse painted showing few traces of human habitation. The contradictory experience in colour draws the viewer into uncertain yet peaceful experiences.
Hazel Wong Mei-yin presents her new works in Receding Scenery, a collection of acrylic paintings of landscapes of Sapporo and Hong Kong. Motivated by her life in and between the two cities, Wong explores movement and transition, using soft colours and subtle tonal shifts to portray the sensitivity and uncertainty in the experience of frequent relocation, being always in transit.
Dony Cheng Hung’s Time Objects takes us away from everyday sceneries and brings us into a surreal world inhabited by spheres. Inspired by moon-phase charts, Cheng plays with our perceptions of space and time, spatialising time as an ambivalent field and further situating it within somewhat familiar built environments. The use of Musou Black, an ultra-light-absorbing pigment, elevates the depiction of the depth and suspension of time, adding a layer of complexity to the physical bodily experience in viewing the works.
