Ticko Liu’s Vivid Meditation on Impermanence

Why We Recommend it
Ticko Liu’s Ephemera explores fleeting moments through vivid colours, blending Chinese ink and Western oil painting traditions.
Description
Ticko Liu’s Ephemera features his latest paintings, treating painting as a collage-like practice — an intuitive weaving of ideas, inspirations, images and observations of the world around him. Drawing from Chinese ink painting and Western oil traditions, Liu combines freehand brushwork inspired by the Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden with vivid colours and wave-like lines to craft dreamlike yet familiar spaces. Inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e palettes and spatial sensibilities, he fuses all these influences into a distinctive visual language uniquely his own.
Gallery Exit’s exhibition contemplates the fleeting beauty and interconnectedness of life, inviting viewers to reflect on impermanence and emotional depth. Highlights like “5:30am in Ngong Ping” and “Held by Moonlight” trace the artist’s passage from night into dawn, where natural elements dissolve into surreal landscapes that blend memory with immediate sensation, turning transient moments into timeless images.
Born in Hong Kong in 1996, Liu graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2019 with a bachelor of arts in visual arts. His surrealistic paintings draw on various inspirations, such as daily scenes, flora and fauna, as well as the cinema. These elements are reimagined with bright colours and flowing lines, creating a relatable fantasy space grounded in everyday life.
