Botany Breathes and Blinks in the Garden of Resemblances

Why We Recommend it

Playful artworks such as a ginseng that breathes, an onion with an eye, and a pomegranate with teeth blur the boundaries between nature, technology, and imagination.

Description

Hong Kong artist Phoebe Hui presents her new works in Oi! Spotlight: The Garden of Resemblances, featuring interactive installations that explore the interplay between nature and technology.

After recovering from a chronic illness through traditional medicine, Hui became captivated by its evocative and poetic power. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s concept of the episteme in The Order of Things, The Garden of Resemblances examines the evolving relationship between nature and the human body. As technology reshapes our perception of knowledge and the world, Hui aims to capture the transition from traditional to modern thought.

Notable pieces include Onion Eye(s) Family, which features flower bulbs with pulsing lights that mimic the opening and closing of an eye, and Ginseng Dreams, a breathing ginseng root symbolising rest and renewal.
