Gordon Cheung Navigates Histories of Identity and Belonging

Why We Recommend it

Gordon Cheung’s debut solo exhibition at gdm (Galerie du Monde), New Territories, features a retrospective of the multimedia artist’s works, exploring identity, belonging and the history of global capitalism.

Description

Gordon Cheung’s New Territories marks the artist’s debut solo exhibition at gdm (Galerie du Monde), featuring a striking retrospective of his painting and sculptural works. Cheung’s art traces the interconnected histories of global capitalism from the Dutch Golden Age during the 17th century to the rise of China as a 21st-century superpower, questioning their impact on identity, territory and belonging.

Through evocative motifs like a lone baroque archway and a cowboy on a bull, Cheung weaves complex narratives like an archaeologist unraveling lost stories. His work delves into diasporic movements and the colonial cartographies, juxtaposing personal ancestry against the city’s evolving landscape. This exhibition invites reflection on history’s power and our place within shifting territories, offering compelling insights into cultural identity in an uncertain future.

A London-based contemporary multi-media artist, Cheung has developed an innovative approach to art that blurs the lines between virtual and actual reality. His work reflects on existential questions about what it means to be human in civilizations shaped by histories written by victors. He studied at London’s Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art and has exhibited internationally, with works held in major collections including Museum of Modern Art, New York and the British Museum.
