Photographer Greg Girard’s Iconic Works Light Up M+ Facade

Why We Recommend it
World-renowned photographer Greg Girard’s works illuminate the M+ façade, creating a cinematic tribute to Hong Kong’s dynamic urban spirit from the 1970s to 90s.
Description
From now until 28 September, HK:PM transforms the M+ Facade into a living canvas, animating decades of Hong Kong’s urban energy with luminous projections. Drawing from world-renowned photographer Greg Girard’s archive of film photographs taken between the 1970s and 90s, the show reveals different scenes — from Central’s bustling street life to the now-demolished and enigmatic Kowloon Walled City — inviting viewers to experience a collective memory in perpetual motion.
The installation follows M+’s 2024 live-cinema event Hong Kong Made Me, where Girard collaborated with the Beijing-based rock band Gong Gong Gong to deliver a memorable cinematic and multimedia experience.
Born in 1955, Girard began his career in the 1970s and spent over 30 years exploring Asian metropolises such as Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong, capturing their social and physical transformations. Celebrated for his archival records of life in the now-demolished Kowloon Walled City, his work is held in leading collections such as M+, the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto.
