World Within Wood: Material Memory and the Spirit of Hong Kong

Why We Recommend it

In Grotto Fine Art’s World Within Wood, Hong Kong artists explore wood as material and metaphor, tracing memory, spirituality and urban life.

Description

Marking the first chapter of Grotto Fine Art’s 25th anniversary, World Within Wood features Hong Kong artists working across painting, carving and sculpture to explore wood as both medium and metaphor. Split into two sections and conceptual worlds, the exhibition moves between the city’s material intensity and its introspective undercurrents. Artists such as Kevin Fung, Casper Chan and Karen Louie reflect on urban life — its networks, desires and shadows — while another group including Lam Tung-pang, Bouie Choi and Scarlett Leung turns to the organic grain of wood to probe memory, spirituality and the subconscious.

Across the exhibition, wood becomes a site of tension between permanence and change, tradition and reinvention. Through deeply personal interpretations of landscape and psyche, the works offer a layered reading of Hong Kong’s cultural dualities and the resilience embedded within them.
