Monuments: Art of History and Transformation

Why We Recommend it
Hanart TZ’s Monuments exhibition presents large-scale works by diverse artists that examine time and space shaped by forces such as technology and the pandemic.
Description
Monuments at Hanart TZ is a thought-provoking group exhibition that explores how monumental art marks the shifting tides of history and collective memory. Featuring artists from multiple generations and varied practices, the show reflects on the seismic changes of recent decades — from the pandemic era to and technological acceleration — that have reshaped our understanding of time and identity.
Among the highlights is Yang Jiechang’s seven-metre-long “Dark Horizon.” Rooted in traditional calligraphy and ink painting, it depicts speech bubbles emerging from dark clouds. This powerful image captures the shock Yang felt watching the September 11 attacks unfold on television, as a young man shouted “oh my god” while the World Trade Centre’s Twin Towers collapsed.
Legendary painter Yeh Shih-chiang navigated turbulent times with a spiritual artistic vision. His works, like The Yeh Shih-Chiang Art Museum and Misty White Building, transform architectural forms into symbols of harmony between humans, heaven and earth. Through his art, Yeh connects traditional literati aesthetics with a sense of purity and transcendence.
The exhibition’s opening party is on 28 June, 14:00–18:00.
