Happy Valley: A Transformation of Land and Community

Why We Recommend it
Happy Valley: A Cultural Landscape offers a compelling look at the area’s transformation from a 19th century swamp to a vibrant hub of sports, community and culture.
Description
In Tai Kwun’s latest heritage exhibition, Happy Valley: A Cultural Landscape, visitors can explore the area’s rich history and transformation from a wetlands (originally known as Wong Nai Chung) that was once envisioned as Hong Kong’s civic centre. Despite early challenges with malaria, the area gradually evolved into a vibrant community known for its sports, residential life and cultural diversity until today.
Central to Happy Valley’s transformation has been the development of the Hong Kong Jockey Club racecourse and Canal Road Flyover, which also serves as a key location housing cemeteries for various communities such as the Jewish, Parsee, Hindu, Sikh and Japanese populations. An engaging range of artworks and multimedia displays invite visitors to discover the dynamic interplay between land and people that defines Happy Valley’s unique cultural tapestry.
