Trichiasis: An Exhibition of Feminist and Queer Perspectives

Why We Recommend it
Hou Lam-tsui’s solo exhibition Trichiasis at Hart Haus features sculptures, installations and moving images to explore the female fantasy as an escape from patriarchal and heteronormative reality.
Description
Explore female fantasy in Trichiasis, a solo exhibition by Hong Kong-based visual artist and filmmaker Hou Lam-tsui at Hart Haus. Curated by Kobe Ko, the exhibition features sculptures, installations and moving images. The title refers to a medical condition in which eyelashes grow inward, against their natural direction. The exhibition reimagines this “wrong-way” growth as a radical force that challenges norms, hierarchies and systems of power from feminist and queer perspectives.
A highlight of the exhibition is the premiere of the artist’s new video essay, “Girl’s Shit,” which blends archival materials, 35mm photographs, Super 8 footage and 3D animation. The work follows girls who fantasise about romance and interactions with fictional characters and idols, including boys’ love content and imagined relationships. These fantasies become a form of resilience that redefines womanhood and rejects societal expectations.
Other works in the exhibition include sculptural pieces made with soap and found objects. Soap recurs in the artist’s practice, symbolising society’s obsession with cleanliness and the gendered association of purity with femininity. Through image transfers on used soap and juxtapositions with found objects, the artist rethinks media-induced ideas of femininity, engaging with both its physical and symbolic materiality.
The opening reception will be held on 14 March from 16:00 to 19:00. The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday 11:00 to 18:00, by appointment only.
