Haven Collection: East‑West Design Reflections

Why We Recommend it

WoW! Hong Kong Design Series II – East‑West Design Reflections traces Ming furniture’s legacy and its dialogue with modern design.

Description

Hong Kong Heritage Museum’s WoW! Hong Kong Design Series II – East‑West Design Reflections charts Ming furniture’s enduring status as a Chinese cultural symbol and its dialogue with modern design. Following the inaugural Series I staged between 2024 and 2025, this second edition brings together Ming furniture treasures from Dr Lau Chu‑pak’s Haven Collection and a curated selection of modern chairs from Hong Kong and abroad.

Classic pieces — such as a Qing dynasty (1644–1912) alcove bed, a collapsible square table, and a huanghuali horseshoe armchair — are paired with contemporary works including modern designer Hans Wegner’s iconic “CH24 Wishbone Chair” and guest curator’s Freeman Lau’s reinterpretation “Ming Intertwined – Roundback”. From traditional mortise‑and‑tenon joinery to 3D‑printed forms and upcycled materials, the exhibition reveals how the style of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) continue to shape cross‑cultural design thinking across East and West, tradition and innovation.
