Great Design Lives Here: HKDC Spotlights Sham Shui Po

Why We Recommend it

HKDC’s Great Design Lives Here campaign explores Sham Shui Po through an eclectic mix of showcases, installations and community design.

Description

Hong Kong Design Centre’s new brand campaign Great Design Lives Here centres on the theme “Step into Sham Shui Po to Discover Great Design,” exploring the district’s dynamic creative community through an integrated online and offline rollout across MTR and bus networks. At DX design hub, visitors can connect, experience, touch and seek design through five different shows, uncovering how it links culture, community and everyday life, with QR code tasks and limited edition souvenirs adding an interactive layer.

This summer, the hub also features DX Aquatic Summer (until 31 August) an ocean-themed programme with candy-coloured coral and jellyfish installations, a Deep Sea Discovery digital treasure hunt and a series of parent-child workshops ranging from paper art to bamboo weaving.

Alongside this immersive experience, there are other showcases worth checking out. Fashion display Kit Wan Studios Fashion Spotlight (until 4 October) is the award-winning designer’s first comprehensive solo showcase in Hong Kong, tracing a decade of work between Hong Kong and Oslo through mechanical aesthetics, recycled-metal sculpture and fashion that dialogues with technology. Highlights on show include the Year of the Snake collaborative bag with Italian brand Corto Moltedo and the conceptual vest designed for Lenovo’s Me Time fashion collection, among others.

Meow-cation – With cats, we connect (until 2 November) is a community showcase that turns Sham Shui Po’s textile and garment aesthetics into a giant cat installation, accompanied by talks and workshops that link craft, neighbourhood identity and everyday life.

Browse and Found in Sham Shui Po (until 12 November), meanwhile, uses 3D-scanning to record handmade tools and crafts from local residents, projecting the results onto a media wall and guiding visitors through a treasure hunt of everyday stories and hidden design wisdom.

The design fever doesn’t end there. The ever-evolving three-storey installation Node…Node by Hong Kong-based creative duo Stickyline (until 31 December) transforms the atrium into a dynamic spatial experience that uses “nodes” as points of connection between designers, makers and the public.
