Cine Fan Sep/Oct: Dark Cinema and Vampirism Unleashed

Why We Recommend it
To welcome in the spooky season this fall, HKIFF Cine Fan brings to audiences a collection of David Lynch’s enchantingly horrifying works and a wide range of award winning vampire films from all over the world – ranging from the origins of the vampire film genre to more modern works of this century.
Description
This year, Halloween comes early as Cine Fan pushes the boundaries of fear and imagination in its September and October edition, featuring legendary director David Lynch’s nightmarish surrealist cinema alongside a captivating selection of vampire-inspired horror films.
Lynch sadly passed away this January (1946–2025), but his legacy endures. This autumn, Cine Fan features The Haunting Dreamscapes of David Lynch, showcasing ten seminal films – from his debut Eraserhead, a surreal nightmarish story exploring alienation and fatherhood to Mulholland Dr., a haunting meditation on Hollywood, identity and illusion that earned Lynch Best Director at Cannes. The series also includes Welcome to Lynchland, a documentary directed by filmmaker Stéphane Ghez exploring Lynch’s groundbreaking work. The popular Cine Fan Film Course will also feature, where critics and academics share their insights in a series of eight lectures.
Accompanying Lynch’s works are a variety of vampire films, each showcasing a different representation and metaphor of vampirism. For example, acclaimed director Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire follows vampire Louis as he recounts centuries of love, loss and moral torment. Meanwhile, award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s Cronos centres on an antiques dealer who discovers an ancient scarab device granting eternal life but at a dark cost.
Movies will be screened across various cinemas in Hong Kong – including M+ Cinema and Premiere Elements, among others.
