Why We Recommend it

The 36th Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival celebrates diverse queer cinema with screenings, panel discussions and honours.

Description

The 36th Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival (HKLGFF) features 22 global LGBTQ+ feature films and 37 shorts. The festival’s thematic focus celebrates diversity and inclusion while addressing ongoing challenges like homophobia and transphobia.

Highlights include the opening film Jimpa, starring Olivia Colman, about a filmmaker and her nonbinary teen visiting their gay father in Amsterdam, confronting family dynamics. The centrepiece Cactus Pears follows protagonist Anand’s return to rural India, where he rekindles a romance that explores grief, tradition and queer identity amid a conservative community. The closing comedies Four Mothers and Flat Girls bring humour and heart through a chaotic caregiving story and a Thai lesbian romance.

HKLGFF’s audience engagement is also enriched by post-screening Q&A sessions and panel discussions. The Prism Award honours Nick Infinger’s impactful advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights in Hong Kong, underscoring the festival’s commitment to social progress and cinematic excellence.

Film screenings will be held at Broadway Cinematheque, Premiere Elements and Palace IFC.
