Queer Films for Every Mood: Hong Kong’s LGBTQ+ Film Fest is Back!

Why We Recommend it
Description
Celebrating its 37th edition, the Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival returns with its largest programme in recent years, featuring 37 LGBTQ+ movies and 38 shorts. To navigate this plethora of opportunity, instead of the usual theme-based categories, this year the festival groups its selections into six “moods” for audiences to browse based on how they feel.
Kicking off the festival are two international films making their Hong Kong premieres: Stop! That! Train!, a comedy featuring Asian American superstar Jujubee alongside other drag icons; and Montréal, My Beautiful, starring award-winning Chinese actress Joan Chen as a mother navigating her unexpected journey towards discovering her sexuality.
The latter movie’s writer-director Xiaodan He is one of filmmakers appearing in-person at the festival. The directors behind special presentation Test and Filipino animated film Zsazsa Zaturnnah will also appear for post-screening Q&As. Local filmmakers will also be in attendance at the “Her Stories – New Hong Kong Shorts” “Love In Pink: Emerging Hong Kong Shorts” presentations.
An opening party will be held at Soho House Hong Kong following the screening of the opening films from 22:30 on 4 September. Admission is exclusive to opening night ticket holders.
