The Forbidden City and the World: Cultural Encounters at HKPM

Why We Recommend it

Discover 600 years of global exchange through Forbidden City treasures, from Zheng He’s voyages to Qing court European clocks.

Description

The Forbidden City and the World: Cultural Encounters situates the imperial court within a global network of exchange across the Yuan (1271–1368), Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1912) dynasties. Featuring over 130 artefacts, including 18 grade-one national treasures from the Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM), the exhibition traces how China interacted with the wider world through diplomacy, trade, science and craftsmanship.

Highlights range from Yuan cloisonné enamels and Qing court European clocks to objects linked to Zheng He’s maritime voyages and the Canton trade system. Drawn from major collections including the HKPM, the Chris Hall Collection and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, the display spans paintings, ceramics, textiles, jewellery and more. Presented as part of a wider series in 2026, this exhibition offers essential context for understanding the Forbidden City as a dynamic centre of global cultural exchange.
