Joyful Encounters: The Ink Rhapsody of Wong Kwan Shut

Why We Recommend it

HKPM’s Joyful Encounters traces Wong Kwan Shut’s life as a scholar-artist, revealing how connoisseurship shaped his ink practice.

Description

Joyful Encounters: The Connoisseurship and Art of Wong Kwan Shut marks Hong Kong’s first major retrospective of the late scholar-artist, presented at the Hong Kong Palace Museum. Drawing from a significant 2025–2026 donation of 68 works, the exhibition brings together Wong’s calligraphy, painting, collaborative pieces and collected classical works. It foregrounds his dual identity as both creator and connoisseur, examining how close study of ancient masters informed his brushwork, aesthetic judgement and poetic sensibility.

Rather than a linear biography, the exhibition unfolds as an intellectual and artistic dialogue across time, situating Wong within a lineage of Chinese literati traditions while highlighting his distinctly Hong Kong context. Presented shortly after his passing in April 2026, the exhibition also serves as a tribute, reflecting on a lifetime devoted to ink, scholarship and the art of looking.
