Bamboo Baskets: Chinese Origins, Japanese Innovations

Why We Recommend it

The finest bamboo art in East Asia is on display at HKU, with more than 200 objects tracing the influence of Chinese prototypes on the development of Japanese basketry over the past 150 years.

Description

Held by the University Museum and Art Gallery of HKU, the Bamboo Baskets: Chinese Origins, Japanese Innovations features over 200 objects, with loans from both the Naej Collection (Germany) and the Muwen Tang Collection (Hong Kong), to present the finest achievements of bamboo art in East Asia.

The exhibition reassesses the central role played by continental prototypes, or karamono (唐物, literally “Tang things” or “Chinese things”), in the development of Japanese basketry over the past 150 years. It traces the evolution of Ming and Qing dynasty vessels, their influence on Edo period artefacts, and the innovative development of contemporary kogei.
