Why We Recommend it
What happens when the golden age of Hong Kong cinema meets cutting-edge technology? Night Charades, an innovative AI-generated animation by Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen, brings iconic cinematic moments to life on the M+ façade, offering a contemporary homage to the city’s rich film heritage.
Description
From 22 March to 29 June 2025, the M+ Facade will showcase Night Charades, an engaging AI-generated animation created by Ho Tzu Nyen. This work pays tribute to the golden age of Hong Kong cinema, featuring animated characters who perform mimes inspired by legendary scenes and stars such as Leslie Cheung and Maggie Cheung.
The animation reinterprets classic films through a futuristic lens, combining compelling visuals with theatrical lighting reminiscent of Baroque art. Constantly reshuffled by algorithms, Night Charades offers a non-linear exploration of Hong Kong’s cinematic legacy, inviting both familiar and new audiences to engage with its cultural history.
In conjunction with this installation, a film programme titled Ho Tzu Nyen: Investigating Histories will take place at the M+ Grand Stair throughout March 2025, featuring seminal works from the artist’s career. Find out more about Ho Tzu Nyen’s recent works in his exhibition Three Stories: Monsters, Opium, Time, on view at Kiang Malingue until 13 May 2025.
