Ho Tzu Nyen Explores Time, Myth and Identity

Why We Recommend it
Three Stories: Monsters, Opium, Time invites viewers into the intricate narratives of Ho Tzu Nyen, one of Southeast Asia’s most innovative artists. This exhibition intertwines three distinct themes — Japanese folklore, the opium trade, and the concept of time — encouraging a deep engagement with history and mythology through a diverse array of visual media.
Description
The exhibition Three Stories: Monsters, Opium, Time showcases three independent bodies of work by Ho Tzu Nyen: “Night March of Hundred Monsters,” “O for Opium,” and a suite of “Timepieces.” “Night March” explores Japanese folklore by incorporating historical figures into a bestiary of yōkai, while “O for Opium” examines the aestheticisation of the opium trade through layered visual narratives. The “Timepieces” series investigates multiple temporalities, questioning the linear progression of time.
Ho Tzu Nyen’s work critically reflects on the construction of history, myth, and identity, often blending fact and fiction. This exhibition continues his exploration of Southeast Asian histories and cultural identities, offering a complex and immersive experience for viewers.
