Home, A Fire: Group Exhibition Examines Identity, Belonging and Place

Why We Recommend it

Cheng-Lan’s Corner’s second exhibition Home, A Fire brings together 10 international artists to explore domestic space as a site of memory, tension and identity.

Description

Through painting, sculpture and installation, Home, A Fire stages the home as both a physical and psychological site, where everyday objects and emotional states are charged with personal and socio-political meaning. Echoing the appearance of a lived-in interior, the works reference furniture, household items and domestic architecture — forms that appear familiar at first glance yet carry embedded tensions.

Showcasing 10 international artists from the Cheng-Lan Foundation collection, selected works of note include painter Laila Tara H.’s “Takhté (Backgammon),” which draws from her experience of witnessing revolutionary protests in Iran from the distance of her bedroom. Meanwhile, sculptor and installation artist Sofía Salazar Rosales’ “They Ask to Stay” reflects on objects shaped by commodification and forced mobility.

Collectively, the work consider how identities and senses of belonging are formed within these environments, while also pointing to artmaking as a practice rooted in intimate, lived conditions. Curated by Junni Chen, it marks the second exhibition at Cheng-Lan’s Corner,  extending the foundation’s commitment to nurturing global-majority artists, amplifying underrepresented voices and rethinking dominant narratives.
