A Celebration of Song Dynasty Art and Culture

Why We Recommend it
Inspired by the Song Dynasty’s artistic legacy, experience contemporary dance by Shen Wei Dance that fuses with traditional Chinese elements such as poetry, painting and calligraphy.
Description
From June to September 2025, the Chinese Culture Festival returns to Hong Kong with a celebration of Chinese art and culture. Opening with Dongpo: Life in Poems on 13 and 14 June, a dance drama inspired by eminent Song Dynasty (960–1279) poet and scholar Su Dongpo’s works, the show blends traditional poetry, calligraphy and music with contemporary dance. Delicately deconstructing the thoughts and emotions in Su’s poetic works, Dongpo: Life in Poems initiates an artistic dialogue spanning thousands of years.
In his latest contemporary dance production, internationally acclaimed choreographer and visual artist Shen Wei returns to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. He was the lead choreographer of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony and has created works for major companies worldwide, including Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Dutch National Ballet, the Modern Dance Company in Guangzhou and many others. His innovative performative installations and site-specific works were presented at a number of distinguished museums and galleries such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum, Power Station of Art Shanghai and Asia Society Hong Kong Center. Blending Chinese heritage with contemporary art, Shen Wei’s latest show promises to dazzle global audiences with his visionary style.
Alongside the performance, there is a dance masterclass on 11 June where participants can experience the fusion of classical Chinese dance called shen yun with modern dance techniques.
