Hong Kong Film Archive Exhibition Celebrates City’s Cinema Heritage

Why We Recommend it
The Hong Kong Film Archive turns 25 with a blockbuster exhibition celebrating the city’s rich movie heritage.
Description
During the heyday of its cinematic golden age, Hong Kong was home to the third biggest movie industry in the world, trailing only Hollywood and Bollywood in terms of reach and production. That 1980s and 1990s peak did not come out of nowhere — as the Hong Kong Film Archive’s blockbuster exhibition makes clear. Celebrating its silver jubilee, the Sai Wan Ho institution is staging a large commemorative show over 10 months at Sha Tin’s Hong Kong Heritage Museum, as part of Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival 2026.
Drawing from its collection of more than 1.3 million film artefacts, Hong Kong Film Archive Stories: Treasure Hunting for 25 Years celebrates the city’s screen heritage with displays including vintage costumes, awards trophies, interactive exhibitions and video reflections from key players. Learn about Hong Kong’s early days as a nascent cinema city, to its ascent as the global film hub that birthed everything from iconic Stephen Chow comedies and gritty gangster flicks, to the arthouse fare of its best-known export.
