Guitarist Dan LaVelle Launches a New Jazz Night at Oyasumi

Why We Recommend it
Tsim Sha Tsui lounge bar Oyasumi brings Hong Kong another jazz night, courtesy of former Motown guitarist Dan LaVelle.
Description
Another month, another fresh jazz series in Hong Kong. Hot on the heels of Drip Music’s new residency at Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre – and in the slipstream of Justin Siu’s Blue Study Live opening its doors – Tsim Sha Tsui nocturnal hangout Oyasumi has begun hosting low-key live jazz nights every Tuesday and Friday.
Our host is US guitar veteran Dan LaVelle – whose claim to fame is once working with Motown star Martha Reeves. Clearly an appreciator of fine female vocal cords, he’s programmed a range of intimate duets with singers throughout July, starring Adriana Tang (3, 10 and 24 July), Elodie Lee (7 and 28 July), Yoroko Chan (31 July), Lea Lecontre (14 July), and Rachel Sung (17 and 21 July – Michael Chan steps in on guitar for the latter date).
The setlists promise a mix of classic jazz standards as well as Brazilian, gospel, blues, and contemporary tunes, with guest bassists and horn players sitting in some sets. It appears Hong Kong’s growing appreciation for jazz isn’t slowing down any time soon.
