The Mihn Machine: An Exhibition of Nightlife Poster Art

Why We Recommend it

How designer Stevie Whisper fashioned a distinct visual identity for underground Hong Kong nightclub 宀, AKA Mihn, in 100 posters.

Description

While writing about music has long been compared to “dancing about architecture,” visual design and audio art have long enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship — the world of LP cover art might be considered a medium all of its own. As might the milieu of the gig flyer, elevated from advertisement to art long before pop artists like Keith Haring and Andy Warhol embraced the format. Good venues know this, setting an agenda with a distinct unified visual aesthetic.

For the past year, the visual identity of Hong Kong’s underground club 宀 — otherwise known as Mihn Club, when communicating offline in audible syllables — has been clearly defined thanks to Stevie Whisper. The Belgrade-based designer has created more than 100 posters for the Sheung Wan venue since September 2025, and to mark this milestone, a selection of his work will be presented as a short-run exhibition, wittily titled The Mihn Machine.

As a DJ/producer himself, Whisper brings to the genre a DIY spirit and nostalgia for days past — eschewing social media conventions to work with traditional large-form, pigment prints, visceral-visual artifacts that integrate inevitable creases and weather stains into their aesthetic — a reminder of the intimacies of the dancefloor and non-virtual realities of a gloriously messy night out.

Founded in 2018, the 100-capacity 宀 Club is one of the city’s premier temples of electronic sound. Otherwise known as designer/illustrator Stefan Unković, Whisper’s work has previously promoted more than 700 music and cultural events elsewhere on the planet, over the past two decades.

The exhibition opens at 19:00 on 4 September and runs daily, noon to 19:00, until 11 September.
