A Triple Bill of HK Singer-songwriters at The Fringe Club

Why We Recommend it

An intimate evening with a trio of solo Hong Kong singer-songwriters, from different musical backgrounds, sharing their latest works.

Description

Nominally topping this triple of bill of mononymous talents is show organiser Tomii, a lynchpin of the local scene for the past decade, who first found notoriety as co-leader of seminal indie-folk band Stranded Whale. Since that band’s sad 2020 demise, Tomii has matured as a songwriter, as evidenced especially on his recently released rootsy fourth solo album, New Country New Road, a cheeky hat-nod to folky UK indie Black Country New Road. Don’t be put off — it’s more folk than country, with no pedal steel guitar in earshot — a delicate acoustic affair which displays the ever-earnest artist’s maturing songwriting.

Also promising new works from a recently released new album is Xiaofan, a frequent collaborator with Tomii who uses a mix of piano and synthesiser to craft emotional landscapes. The Fringe Club bill is rounded out by raw, sensitive singer-songwriter Gwenji, whose sensitive delivery has been known to cause goosebumps in attentive listeners.

The performance begins at 19:30.
