Why We Recommend it

Island Express Jazz Orchestra will perform contemporary compositions and arrangements, as well as a selection of classics, with renowned Japanese Jazz Pianist Junko Moriya as a featured soloist.

Description

Formed in 2010, the Island Express Jazz Orchestra (IEJO) is a 17-strong band from Hong Kong. The orchestra specialises in large-ensemble arrangements by modern jazz composers, including Bob Mintzer, Frank mantooth, Pat Metheny and Matt Catinggub, as well as fresh arrangements of standards by Jazz legends such as Ella Fitzgerald.

Prominent Japanese jazz pianist, composer and big band leader Junko Moriya, who has made her mark in the jazz world since her debut in 1997, will join the band. Moriya is the first Asian woman who won a prize at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition in 2005.

This show is presented by the Fringe Club as a part of their “Jazz-Go-Central, Jazz-Go-Fringe” project, which was founded to create a more fertile and vibrant Jazz and music ecology in Hong Kong. The Big Band Night is a recurring event in which various local jazz big bands are invited to perform at Fringe Dairy.
