3812 Gallery Unveils Hsiao Chin Archives and Debut Exhibition

Why We Recommend it

Discover Hsiao Chin’s fusion of East-West abstraction in the eponymous archives’ inaugural show, The Light of Hope, at 3812 Gallery.

Description

The Light of Hope is the inaugural exhibition of the newly launched Hsiao Chin Archives at 3812 Gallery. It explores the unique fusion of Eastern philosophy and Western abstraction defining Hsiao’s groundbreaking work and reflects on the cultural dialogue and innovation from his early post-war career.

The exhibition features a selection of defining works like Pintura 5 from Hsiao’s Spanish period (1956–1959), including delicate ink pieces, the dynamic Chinese Characters Composition series (1958–59) and symbolic abstract paintings. These highlight his experimental approach to form and meaning, revealing his evolving engagement with European modernism and avant-garde techniques.

Born in Shanghai in 1935, Hsiao is a pioneer of modern Chinese abstract art. After moving to Madrid at 21, he not only immersed himself in Europe’s avant-garde but also co-founded both the Ton Fan Art Group in 1955, China’s first post-war modern art collective and later the influential Punto International Art Movement in 1960. His works are celebrated worldwide, with works held in major institutions such as M+, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Musée Guimet in Paris and National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.
