Hu Xiaoyuan’s Journey Through Existence and Materiality

Why We Recommend it
Hu Xiaoyuan’s Veering is an essential exhibition for those interested in contemporary art that challenges our understanding of destiny and consciousness, with new works exploring the connections between human existence and the natural world.
Description
In Veering, Hu Xiaoyuan showcases 12 newly commissioned works across seven series, integrating installation, sound, painting and video to address profound questions about individual survival and the essence of life. The exhibition, her first solo presentation in Hong Kong, prompts visitors to consider whether breaking from predetermined paths is necessary for true awakening.
Using everyday materials such as aerospace-grade aluminium, sea shells, organza silk and corn fibre, Hu creates immersive environments that blur the boundaries between day and night. Through her innovative use of translucent drapes and lighting design, she fosters an ambiguous spatial experience that encourages reflection on themes of time, materiality, existence, and consciousness.
As part of Tai Kwun Contemporary’s Breakthrough series, Veering runs alongside solo exhibitions by Alicja Kwade and Maeve Brennan. Together, these exhibitions highlight the diverse storytelling methods of three female artists, each exploring materials and narratives in unique ways. Hu Xiaoyuan’s work stands out for its poetic visual style and its ability to provoke thought about how we navigate a complex contemporary society.
