Exploring Human-Animal Connections Through Multimedia Art

Why We Recommend it

PHD Group presents Animale, an exhibition by Kyoto-based artist Sasaoka Yuriko that explores the intricate bond between humans and nature through immersive multimedia installations. This event invites audiences to engage with themes of agency, mortality, and societal narratives.

Description

Osaka-born artist Sasaoka Yuriko examines the complex relationship between humans and nature in her exhibition Animale at PHD Group. Through immersive multimedia installations, Sasaoka incorporates elements of animism, masquerade, and Osaka’s comedic traditions to interrogate societal narratives that shape our existence.

The exhibition features a large-scale sound and video installation inspired by the stories of working animals. Visitors can expect to see eerily assembled sculptural figures crafted from vintage stuffed animals, recycled fabrics, and video screens displaying the artist’s own mouth and eyes. Central to the installation is a hauntingly catchy song about labour, reflecting on the exploitation present in both human and animal worlds.

Animale challenges socially constructed boundaries between humans and animals, dismantling notions of human superiority through brightly-hued figures and thought-provoking symbolism. This marks Sasaoka Yuriko’s second solo exhibition with PHD Group.

Visits are by appointment only; the address will be disclosed upon confirmation of your booking.
