‘I was not invited (The Organ Grinder’s Canto)’: A Musical Performance by Leila Hekmat

Why We Recommend it

This site-specific show was created specifically for the city by Berlin-based artist Leila Hekmat, and will extend into an exhibit of costumes and photographs reflecting the performance.

Description

Hekmat’s performance art project aims to engage directly with social reality, identity politics and the specifics of space, while asking questions about how art relates to people.

I Was Not Invited (The Organ Grinder’s Canto) is set to a song cycle inspired by Franz Schubert’s Winterreise, Roland Barthe’s A Lover’s Discourse and Baroque costumes.

It centres around the search for humour through the darkness and human suffering, drawing on recurring themes in Schubert’s work – death, loneliness and a yearning for closeness and affection.

The performance will take place at 10pm on Thursday March 29th and Friday March 30th, extending into an exhibit at Duddell’s.
