IndigoFest: Paul Roth Launches a New Album at Indigo Town’s Soho House Festival

Why We Recommend it

Funk-pop band Indigo Town headline their own mini-fest, alongside folksy singer-songwriter Paul Roth, Cantopop drummer Lawrence, mash-up queen Heidi Mak and smooth jazzers Poh & The Gang.

Description

Few bands in Hong Kong have the vision to invent an entire festival in their honour — but after more than a decade in the game, Indigo Town have earned the right to go big, and as loud as they please, in this case renting Soho House for an energetic all-nighter. After all, these reliable party-starters have been enticing agnostic crowds to awkwardly strut their stuff since 2015. Their appeal lies in a gloriously unpretentious approach to repertoire, with vintage cheese singalongs like Abba and Gloria Gaynor sitting on setlists next to classic rock stompers by Queen and The White Stripes. The not-so-secret weapon here is the enviably pliable chops of lead vocalist John Gil.

IndigoFest is equally eclectic, sporting four more acts from across the musical spectrum. The band’s own guitarist Paul Roth — an incredibly talented, indie-folk-ish singer-songwriter in his own right — is using the occasion to unveil a long-gestating new album, which on the basis of early singles is going to be earnest and excellent. There’s also Cantopop originals from session drummer-turned-bandleader Lawrence, A.K.A 羅倫斯, smooth grooves from jazz outfit Poh & The Gang, and a set from mash-up maestro DJ Heidi Mak. Doors open at an early 18:45, with the opening act at 19:30.
