12 Years On, Seminal Female Ink Artists Return to Alisan

Why We Recommend it

Revisiting the Jade Terrace brings together the artists from Alisan Fine Arts’ 2014 exhibition Beyond the Jade Terrace, showcasing the work of these now-major figures in contemporary ink.

Description

A dozen years after Alisan Fine Arts introduced a new vanguard in contemporary ink with Beyond the Jade Terrace (2014), the gallery reunites the artists in its latest exhibition, Revisiting the Jade Terrace.

Returning from the previous exhibition are Chu Chu, Wang Mengsha and Zhang Yirong, joined by Zhang Ying. Born between the 1960s and 1980s, the four Chinese female artists have become major figures in contemporary ink over the past decade, each with a distinct style.

From experimental combinations of photography and calligraphy to reimagined figure painting, contemplative landscapes and meticulous gongbi compositions, the exhibition showcases their shared commitment to expanding the potential of ink as well as the role of female ink artists in China.

This exhibition at Southside sister venue Alisan Atelier is part of the gallery’s 45th-anniversary programme, “Then and Now,” representing the “now” alongside Tradition Renewed: Contemporary Literati Masters at Alisan Fine Arts in Central. Together, the two exhibitions explore the evolution of Chinese ink painting across generations and changing social, cultural and artistic landscapes.

The opening reception of Revisiting the Jade Terrace starts at 15:00 on 5 September, with artists Wang Mengsha and Zhang Yirong in attendance. The exhibition is open from Wednesday to Saturday.
