Ink and the City: Animating Hong Kong’s Calligraphy in Urban Life

Why We Recommend it

Curated by calligraphy researcher Westley Wong, Ink and the City | Calligraphy in Urban Life explores Hong Kong’s unique calligraphy tradition through interactive exhibits and kinetic LED art installations at the airport.

Description

Calligraphy is woven through Hong Kong’s urban fabric, from neon signs to movie posters and business cards, shaping the city’s visual culture. The airport’s exhibition, Ink and the City | Calligraphy in Urban Life, reveals the tradition of applied calligraphy through multimedia displays, innovative printmaking and interactive designs that invite reflection on its enduring influence and future potential.

A standout feature is the debut of kinetic LED screen installations, created by artists Fafa and Desmond Lo in collaboration with curator and calligraphy researcher Westley Wong. These animated calligraphic works, derived from the Ink Brush City Visual Archive, offer a sensory journey through Hong Kong’s everyday visual heritage. One highlight is “Calligraphy in Motion” by Fafa, which animates characters sourced from diverse everyday sites across Hong Kong, including historic landmarks in Sheung Wan, public housing estates and local temples. Paired with original soundscapes, the show reinterprets the fluid beauty of this traditional art in a bold, contemporary way.
