Isaac Chong Carefully Explores Hong Kong’s History

Why We Recommend it
Through a range of works like neon lights, glass sculptures and drawings, Isaac Chong Wai’s carefully draws from his upbringing in colonial Hong Kong to delve into the city’s past and identity, as well as human solidarity.
Description
As his second solo exhibition, Isaac Chong Wai‘s carefully at Blindspot Gallery explores the city’s past through the lens of his upbringing in colonial Hong Kong, reflecting on the identity and present of the city and its people.
The exhibition opens with two neon lights flashing “Falling Carefully” and “⼩⼼地跌倒,” mirroring Hong Kong’s bilingual character. Some of the highlights are the debut of his latest work, “Touched: Rouge”, a series that uses body imprints to outline the contours of the protagonists from the classic Hong Kong film Rouge (1987); and the glass sculpture series Missing Space (Hong Kong) features each piece cast from traces of war found on surfaces left by the Battle of Hong Kong in 1941, including bullet holes.
Aside from addressing the city’s history and culture, the exhibition also features Chong’s video installation, “Die Mütter,” commissioned by ifa-Galerie Berlin.
The artist will chat with Tobias Berger, curatorial director of Serakai Studio, on 13 September at 16:00.
