Isaac Chong Wai: Intimacy, Vulnerability and Performed Identity

Why We Recommend it

Isaac Chong Wai’s live art debut in Hong Kong explores gender, memory and intimacy through performance and installation.

Description

An Intimate Surrender is Isaac Chong Wai’s first solo live art exhibition in Hong Kong. Curated by Tai Kwun’s associate curator Louiza Ho, it unfolds as a layered meditation on gender, memory and performance. The multifaceted show fuses live performance and installation to examine Asian masculinity through the frameworks of gender performativity and queer temporality, staging durational encounters marked by vulnerability, repetition and suspended time.

Taking Farewell My Concubine as a point of departure, Chong revisits the celebrated Chinese novel and film’s exploration of Peking Opera and cross-gender performance. The work draws on its emotional and historical complexity, particularly its portrayal of identity shaped through role-playing, discipline and political upheaval. Gestures and physical vocabularies from Peking Opera are reactivated here, opening a dialogue between theatrical tradition and contemporary embodiment.

Born in 1990 and based in Berlin, Chong is known for translating interpersonal tension and collective memory into minimalist performative forms. His practice navigates intimacy and vulnerability through the body, often using repetition and durational presence to challenge fixed identities. Having participated in performance projects notably the International Exhibition of the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024, the show further expands Chong’s engagement with performative and spatial interventions on an international stage. In the installation series Touched, bodily imprints on mirrored and glass surfaces form fragmented traces that resist linear narrative, inviting reflection on proximity, absence and embodied memory.
