It’s Complicated: French Artist Claire Tabouret Paints Conflicted Couples

Why We Recommend it
Borrowing art-historical icons and internet snapshots, Claire Tabouret visualises love in all its ambiguity, complexity and volatility in her first Hong Kong solo exhibition.
Description
Are they embracing or fighting? Holding one another or pushing each other away? Attracted or repulsed by one another?
Los Angeles-based French artist Claire Tabouret (b. 1981) show Born in Mirrors tackles the subject of love head-on through paintings depicting a Hollywoodesque kiss in close-up to a couple immortalised in a pose that resembles a wrestling match. Her works capture tense and restless bodies of couples—embracing but never truly merging into one—in search of stability, which they don’t seem to be able to get hold of unless through domination.
