Jacques Henri Lartigue Captures Modern France

Why We Recommend it

Jacques Henri Lartigue’s solo exhibition Keep Only the Sunshine features luminous works that capture joy, movement and memory.

Description

Presented during French May 2026 and marking the 150th anniversary of Galerie Kraemer, Keep Only the Sunshine offers a renewed look at Jacques Henri Lartigue’s (1894–1986) photographic world. Alongside a selection of the renowned photographer’s iconic platinum prints, the show features rarely seen large-format prints from 1970s colour diapositives, bringing fresh attention to a lesser-known dimension of his practice. Together, these works reveal Lartigue’s enduring fascination with movement, leisure and moments of joy.

Born in 1894, Lartigue is celebrated for optimistically capturing the spirit of life from France’s Belle Époque (1871–1914) through to the 1980s in scenes of car races, fashionable women and seaside holidays on the French Riviera and Basque coast. Internationally recognised from 1963 onwards, the photographer’s work has influenced generations with its intimacy, vitality and sense of wonder.
