Into the Conflict Zone: A Hong Kong Banker-Turned-Humanitarian’s Story

Why We Recommend it

‘From Material World to Humanitarian World’ traces Jason Yip’s story of becoming one of the very first Hong Kongers at the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to be hired as an on-the-ground delegate.

Description

Having been dispatched to conflict zones including Palestine, Afghanistan, Jordan, Syria and Myanmar, Jason Yip upholds the ICRC missions of protecting civilians, assisting in the location of those separated from families and rebuilding post-war infrastructures. Yip has been involved in numerous life-threatening scenarios, such as negotiating with the Taliban in Afghanistan for the release of 33 kidnapped schoolchildren and their teachers, as well as delivering letters from prisoners in the mountains of Myanmar to their families.

In 2018, Jason received a Medal of Honour from the HKSAR Government and was selected as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons by Junior Chamber International Hong Kong.

In this evening session moderated by Asia Society Hong Kong Chairman Ronnie C. Chan, Yip will retrace his unconventional career pathway as well as offer his insights into the need for more Hong Kongers to get involved in international organisations.

Please note that the event is a part of the ‘Movers & Shakers Program’ for students only. Registration with student details is required.
