Kat O Dajiao Arts Festival: Where Contemporary Art Meets Ritual

Why We Recommend it

Celebrating Kat O’s once-in-a-decade Jiao Festival, an art festival welcomes villagers and visitors with a series of events, from art installations and documentary screening to guided tours around the island.

Description

Themed around Kat O’s once-in-a-decade Jiao Festival, Sun and Moon in Harmony: Kat O Dajiao Arts Festival brings a series of events to bridge contemporary art with deep-rooted traditions.

The On Lung Qing Jiao is the island’s major Taoist festival, celebrated by its Hakka and waterborne communities for more than 200 years. The ritual is traditionally held to settle the dragon, purify the island and pray for peace and a good harvest.

Taking place from 11 to 15 October this year, the Jiao Festival will be accompanied by a 25-day arts festival. This new cultural initiative aims to introduce the island’s traditions through contemporary art while promoting sustainable ecotourism.

One of the major highlights is a film-sharing session featuring Bamboo Theatre, Cheuk Cheung’s 2019 documentary portraying the cultural space created through bamboo. Art installations by artists from Hong Kong and Shenzhen will be showcased across the island, alongside public workshops, guided tours and music performances.
